cvc Get Involved: Trails & Rails Program
The Trails & Rails Program is an educational partnership between Amtrak and the National Park Service to offer a unique and interactive travel experience on trains throughout the country.

The Trails & Rails Program gives Amtrak passengers a unique window on the region. Guides are instrumental in telling the great stories of events and people that shaped the nation’s history and pointing out unique sights that might otherwise be missed.

All Aboard!
Interpretation on Amtrak's Maple Leaf train, heading west to Utica out of the Albany-Rensselaer train station, covers the rich history of the Mohawk Valley, including the story of the Erie Canal.

The Adirondack train program, which focuses on Revolutionary War and Hudson River history, is offered between Croton and Hudson and from Saratoga Springs to Port Henry.

Both programs run every weekend from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Become a Volunteer Guide
Historians and local community enthusiasts are invited to become volunteer interpretive guides. Volunteers receive both orientation and ongoing training to keep the program fresh, as well as meet the high standards set by the National Park Service.

The Trails & Rails Program is affiliated locally with the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor and the Roosevelt-Vanderbilt National Historic Sites. The orientation program is also made possible with guidance from the New York State Canal Corporation and the New York State Department of Transportation.
