Historical Murals of Lyons, Lyons

Historical scenes depicting life on the Erie Canal can be found on 25 buildings from Syracuse to Palmyra, thanks to a grassroots mural project begun in Lyons, New York. The epicenter of “Mural Mania” boasts eight murals, located within an easy walk of the canal and the Village of Lyon’s Main Street.

The jury selected the project not only for its dedication to sharing history through public art, but for its contribution to community revitalization in Lyons. The murals have engaged new audiences, including
at-risk youth, students, community organizations, and residents.

New Visitor Attraction
Visitors are taking a closer look not only at the artwork, but also at other attractions that canal communities have to offer.
  Passion for Place
Look closely at the people in the murals and you may see the face of someone who has been passionately involved in the project.

 The jury commended the project for:

  • Engaging new audiences-- mural projects have embraced the involvement of students, local artists, and community organizations. The murals themselves are drawing new visitors to explore the canal and its history.

  • Developing a local law to set parameters and standards for mural development and maintenance in the Village of Lyons;

  • Looking back to the past for inspiration, while looking forward with a positive vision for the future. Murals are integrated into Lyon's economic revitalization plan;

  • Providing visitors to the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor with a new attraction that connects communities in the central and western region of the Erie Canal;

  • Inspiring neighboring communities to be part of Mural Mania.
