Most towpath sections of the Erie Canalway are open year around from dawn until dusk.
The canal is closed to boat traffic during the winter. The New York State Canal Corporation is responsible for canal operation and maintenance. For more information on lock hours of operation, call 1-800-4-canal-4 or visit NYS Canal Corporation.
Erie Canalway Visitor Center
Be sure to visit the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor Visitor Center, located at Peebles Island State Park in Waterford, New York. The center offers an orientation to the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, as well as local and regional attractions.
The 158-acre Peebles Island State Park at the confluence of the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers features spectacular river views from trails that traverse the island’s gently rolling and wooded landscape. Directly across the Mohawk River and connected by a pedestrian bridge is Waterford’s Lock 2 park, where visitors can picnic, watch boats, or explore the waterway by canoe, kayak, or motorboat.
